BBQ Tofu – 15 minute easy recipe!

This is my recipe for BBQ Tofu. This BBQ Tofu is extra crispy and crunchy because of the coating. It’s made with a mixture of cornstarch and breadcrumbs. The cornstarch crisps up really well while the breadcrumbs adds a delicious crunch. Some seasoning adds flavour before the whole thing is coated in delicious, sticky BBQ sauce.

You can make your own BBQ sauce if you prefer, or use store bought. I like to cook this recipe in the week as it’s quick and easy so I usually opt for shop bought. My favourite is Reggae Reggae sauce, but since I am cooking for a toddler, my spicy sauces have to take a back seat. Instead I’ve been using the Bulls Eye brand, or whatever is on offer that week.

The coating for this tofu is a mixture of cornstarch and breadcrumbs. Lots of recipes call for a cornstarch coating as it really crisps the tofu up, but the addition of breadcrumbs adds some amazing texture and I think really elevates this simple dish.

Another component of the coating is Jerk seasoning. Jerk seasoning is usually a blend of lots of different spices. If you can’t find it in your supermarket, there’s a great recipe to a blend here.

Making the BBQ Tofu

Mix together the coating ingredients on a plate. Cut the tofu into whatever shape you like. I prefer squares. Press each piece of tofu into the coating, making sure all sides are covered.

Heat your oil in a large non-stick pan and add the tofu once the oil is nice and hot. If you add the tofu too early and the oil isn’t hot enough, the tofu will absorb a lot of extra oil and become very greasy. Move the tofu around gently until every surface of the tofu has taken on a nice pale golden colour. Then place on kitchen towels to absorb excess oil.

To serve, drizzle the BBQ sauce over the top, before adding spring onion, chilli flakes or any other toppings you like.
